Mastitis: A Whole-Person Understanding

Mastitis is not only a breast infection or inflammation, it’s often the result of a complex interplay between the body, mind, and emotions. While the physical blockage or infection is the most obvious trigger, the surrounding environment — stress, exhaustion, emotional wellbeing, and mental strain — can all increase susceptibility and affect recovery.

Mastitis is most often triggered by milk remaining in the breast because it hasn’t been drained effectively. This can be due to infrequent feeds, poor latch, oversupply, a blocked duct, or external pressure. When milk accumulates, it causes inflammation in the breast tissue. If bacteria enter (commonly through cracked nipples), infection can develop. Physically, this leads to swelling, pain, redness, heat in the breast, fever, and flu-like symptoms.

Stress, exhaustion, and feeling overwhelmed can play a big role. They can affect your ability to rest, feed regularly, and notice early signs of a blocked duct. Emotional strain can also influence milk flow. Oxytocin (the “let-down” hormone) is highly sensitive to stress, so worry or tension can make it harder for milk to release, worsening stasis. Frustration, guilt, or sadness are common when feeding doesn’t go smoothly, which can deepen emotional distress and sometimes worsen physical symptoms.
